Over Easy

The aroma and sizzle of frying bacon greeted Marjorie as she entered the kitchen and quietly sat at the table.

Turning, he said, “Good morning. Breakfast’s coming right up.” She glanced at the place setting before her and watched him move around the stove.

Exhibiting skills from decades’ worth of practice, he cracked two eggs into the greased skillet, turning them when their whites lost their translucency.

“Here you are, Marj. Eggs over-easy and crispy bacon. Your favorite.”

He touched her white hair gently searched her vacant pale blue eyes. Turning away, he knew she did not recognize him anymore.

    Nicely written.
    And :(

I read deliberately… trying to figure out the ending before I got to it. You got me again. I was surprised and touched at the same time. You excel at this Steve.

  3. This is sad. And lovely.

And…bing! You did it again. These posts need to come with their own package of Kleenex.

  5. And you say MY stuff is sad and depressing …

Well. Until the last line I was considering banging around a bit to get my husband up so he’ll ‘offer’ to make me a nice breakfast. Now forget it! I’m sad and don’t want to grow old (or up for that matter).
    Boo.

  7. I think I wanna try this. I really like your drabbles and admire how you’re able to write so well and conjure up so much emotion with such few words. Your whole drabble is shorter than my comment!

Magnet — you should DEFINITELY try this! It’s a great creative exercise. I try to think of the idea sometime during the week and then I blurt it all out on Thursday or Friday and spend a little while word-smithing to get the word-count right.

Sometimes in that process I find I change the whole thing around after it’s “sat” for a while.
