This week, Ms Red Pen threw down the double-gauntlet of combining the Friday Drabble with an old-Vox writing stalwart: the five-word challenge. Remember, a drabble is a very short story of exactly 100 words. The 5-word challenge though asks you to write an entry of any length or style using five assigned words (bold the five words).
This week’s challenge words: tidings, darken, sketchy, vanity, crept
Feel free to join in and write your own stories on Fridays (100 words or not), and tag them with “friday drabble” and “5wordchallenge” as appropriate and on Twitter with the hashtags #fridaydrabble and #5wordchallenge.

“I bring glad tidings of great joy!” Grant enthused as he bounded into the laboratory. I watched Lisa’s face darken, her eyes narrow. She couldn’t stand Grant — thought he was a hack who hid his considerable failings behind bluster and overt displays of “personality”.
“The new appointment announced?” I asked, knowing Lisa’s vanity would never let her ask Grant for anything.
“Well, the details are a bit sketchy…” he momentarily waffled, but then the excitement crept back into his voice, “but apparently TWO promotions are likely!”
We stared, dumbfounded. Our silences echoing the same thought: who was odd-man-out?
Well done!
When the words are bolded and someone is saying them, I always think of the characters in my head turning towards the camera before saying them.
I’m in a story. You wish you were me.
Okay … so now I’ll have to try this along with my playing around with writing a drabble series …
And my attempt is here – http://gominoklahoma.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/friday-drabble-092410/

Intriguing as ususal, Steve. Although I noticed you snuck in premature hints of A Christmas Carol. ;)
