Friday Drabble: The Call

Remember, a drabble is a very short story of exactly 100 words.  Feel free to join in and write your own drabbles on Fridays and tag them with “friday drabble” and on Twitter with the hashtag #fridaydrabble.

The Call

Brittle leaves scattered as the wind picked up from seemingly nowhere.  In the flickering lantern light, he recalled their first time here.  A different Autumn, and the trees and Carolyn both resplendent.  They shared their first kiss that day.  If it was true that the barrier between worlds was “thin” this night, it would be here that he would find her again.

He started the ceremony and the wind howled momentarily as if in protest and then seemed to give up.  An opalescent luminance coalesced between him and the blackened trees.

His heart leapt, and then stopped.

That wasn’t Carolyn.
