Friday Drabble: A Word

Remember, a drabble is a very short story of exactly 100 words. Feel free to join in and write your own drabbles on Fridays and tag them with “friday drabble” and on Twitter with the hashtag #fridaydrabble.

A Word

The word washed over her, leaving her shaking with eddies of relief as palpable as the tears welling in her tired eyes.

Remission.

She’d known she’d felt better recently, like her “old self” – someone she’d thought closeted away for good – instead of just a trampled battleground in the war between tumor and chemical, but she hadn’t let herself believe it.

Believe it was gone.

Moving towards the clinic’s reception area, she wiped her eyes and took a few deep breaths. Steeling herself to not look too happy, too excited, she walked past the still-waiting patients and their wordless appraisals.

  1. Was this your attempt to prove that you could have a “happy” drabble that was still powerful, elegant, and engaging? Because if so, you succeeded. Nice one.

  3. These 100 words are a study in emotions. In the beginning the emotional scene is set with the sigh much like Atlas may have when he was able to sit the world down and stretch with relief. This woman,, while relieved, was keenly aware of the others who were feeling what she had up to the conversation that brought her relief.
The author was apt in capturing those moments and without to much description was able to convey the emotion alive in it.
    Great job Steve,
