A drabble is a very short story of exactly 100 words. Feel free to join in and write your own drabbles on Fridays and tag them with “friday drabble” and on Twitter with the hashtag #fridaydrabble.
Over Easy
The aroma and sizzle of frying bacon greeted Marjorie as she entered the kitchen and quietly sat at the table.
Turning, he said, “Good morning. Breakfast’s coming right up.” She glanced at the place setting before her and watched him move around the stove.
Exhibiting skills from decades’ worth of practice, he cracked two eggs into the greased skillet, turning them when their whites lost their translucency.
“Here you are, Marj. Eggs over-easy and crispy bacon. Your favorite.”
He touched her white hair gently searched her vacant pale blue eyes. Turning away, he knew she did not recognize him anymore.
Nicely written.
And :(
I know — very :(
I read deliberately… trying to figure out the ending before I got to it. You got me again. I was surprised and touched at the same time. You excel at this Steve.
Thanks Lenore — it was just a “moment” that I saw in my head.
This is sad. And lovely.
Thanks HG — I know you know the day to day of AD.
And…bing! You did it again. These posts need to come with their own package of Kleenex.
Bd — yeah, I know it wasn’t the most cheerful, but it was a very clear moment to me.
And you say MY stuff is sad and depressing …
I know, it was just there sort of fully formed in my head.
Well. Until the last line I was considering banging around a bit to get my husband up so he’ll ‘offer’ to make me a nice breakfast. Now forget it! I’m sad and don’t want to grow old (or up for that matter).
Boo.
Think of how sad I was when I figured out that’s what was happening!
I think I wanna try this. I really like your drabbles and admire how you’re able to write so well and conjure up so much emotion with such few words. Your whole drabble is shorter than my comment!
Magnet — you should DEFINITELY try this! It’s a great creative exercise. I try to think of the idea sometime during the week and then I blurt it all out on Thursday or Friday and spend a little while word-smithing to get the word-count right.
Sometimes in that process I find I change the whole thing around after it’s “sat” for a while.
