Passage

He shushed the dog’s prying snout away, brushing aside a few leaves to uncover it. Its chest fluttered and its twisted wing twitched with tiny spasms.

He cradled it in his palm, its delicate weight barely discernible. He looked up, though it was difficult to say whether in search of an answer or a culprit. The sky was silent on the matter.

Feeling useless, he made soft sounds, and soon the gorget feathers lost their ruby iridescence, as if powered by its tiny heart.

Placing it in a small divot, he gently covered it again. The sky was still silent.
