Jenny could see it in the center of the counter, could smell its sweetness from the kitchen doorway. Ben’s favorite: white icing and devils-food. The candles were blue.
She approached the counter for a better look, inhaling deeply. Her tummy gurgled its approval.
It would drive her brother crazy, her getting to it before him. Her mouth crinkled into an uneasy grin. He always got things first, didn’t he?
She hesitated, listening for her mother’s movements upstairs. Mom had fussed at her, “Don’t even think about it.” But didn’t just saying that make her think about it?
