Friday Drabble: Cake

drabble is a very short story of exactly 100 words. Feel free to join in and write your own drabbles on Fridays and tag them with “friday drabble” and on Twitter with the hashtag #fridaydrabble.

Jenny could see it in the center of the counter, could smell its sweetness from the kitchen doorway. Ben’s favorite: white icing and devils-food. The candles were blue.

She approached the counter for a better look, inhaling deeply. Her tummy gurgled its approval.

It would drive her brother crazy, her getting to it before him. Her mouth crinkled into an uneasy grin. He always got things first, didn’t he?

She hesitated, listening for her mother’s movements upstairs. Mom had fussed at her, “Don’t even think about it.” But didn’t just saying that make her think about it?

Not her fault.

  1. Cake! I thought I’d give the Friday Drabble a try today. They say it’s always best to write about something you know. Keeping it down to 100 words is a challenge. It’s not exactly the ending I planned.
