The tiny reading lamp burning beneath the bedsheet, Carolyn obsessively focused on the pages of The Hobbit. Her mom had said she was too young, but Dad had slipped her his worn copy on Saturday with a wink and a conspiratorial admonition not to get caught.
She shivered at the thought of Mirkwood and jumped when she heard something skitter through the yard below her window. She emerged from under the sheet, looked around.
“Lassie — it’s Goblins!” she hissed, enjoying the excitement of scaring herself. The dog raised her head from its regular place on edge of her bed and settled down.
“You’ll protect us, right?”
Lassie smacked her lips.
Mmmmm, goblins.
Disclaimer: No goblins were injured in the writing of this story.
Ha!
Lol! I was going to say “Mmmmmm, goblins.” but I got beat! :)
Snort.
Mmmmm, lunch.
You can’t eat the goblins. Or the collie.
Now that is a sweet story. Lassie is one good dog.
Thanks H.E. — Lassie was ready to defend if called on. I think.
When I hear skittering under my window late at night, it’s usually rats. And then I wish I had a nice hungry tomcat to take care of them.
Us too. Unless it’s a raccoon. That’s when Penny really becomes Growly McBarkerston, which is really very un-cool at 2 a.m. I gotta say.
Nice! Stupid goblins.
I needed a pick me up after yesterday.
Aw look. Another sweet story, even if one goblin went missing. Come on… Lassie deserves it.
Disclaimer: No actual goblins were hurt in the writing of this story.
My favorite part “enjoyed scaring herself”. Kids will do that if they can control the amount of scaring.
Joe — that was definitely the way I was as a kid. I loved reading scary stories and then hearing the all the creaks in the house. I could totally work myself up.
