Blogshorts, Day 8: Dog Days of Summers

Today is Day #8 of Blogdramedy’s Summer Writing Challenge: Blogshorts. The theme this year is the Dog Days of Summer. 10 days, 10 dogs (nine of which were famous dog-characters chosen by Blogdramedy as inspiration), each story 110 words.

Today’s dog is is Blacktoe. Who’s Blacktoe? That’s a great question. Apparently, Blacktoe was Will Riker’s dog.

A warm twilight wanes into darkness as we exit the restaurant.

“Stop grousing about Into Darkness. I liked it!”

“Carolyn, you’re just hot for Bumbershoot,” he teases.

“Cumberbatch! Get it right buddy, or you’ll be out on your bumbershoot.”

“It’s just not Star. Trek.” he says, well, whines.

“I know I know. You’re a purist. Christ, you named your dog after some obscure NextGen bit of trivia.”

Mock-rage face. “Don’t you bring Blacktoe into this! You love that dog!”

“Yes, sweetie. I do. I do. ”

Mock-supplication. “And me?”

“Yes. You, too. God help me I do. Come on, let’s get home. There’s good wine and… and… maybe we can stream Sherlock?”

  1. I don’t recall Will Riker having a dog—I’m assuming this is a reference to his boyhood in Alaska? (Yes, I am a Second Generation fan.) I don’t want to have to go back and watch all seven seasons to find the reference—or was this from one of the movies?

    Oh yes, good story.

    • HG — you know, I couldn’t even FIND the reference in a search (for the dog, what it looked like, how it was mentioned), so I can’t really tell you. But I thought we were due for an upbeat installment.. :)

  2. I loved the way you brought Blacktoe into the story through the conversation, without Blacktoe actually making an appearance. Nice story!
